For weeks and months I and the rest of the F.A.V.E production crew have been knocking out and planning our work for the F.A.V.E. Jamboree and as well as for Episode 2.

The F.A.V.E Jamobree is a network for college bound kids coming from highschool and as well as people who are interested in the industry of entertainment. It was geared to entertain and teach people about the world of entertainment and how far it has come a long way.

It was great guiding some of these kids to where my first passion started and rejuvenated my creativity to another level. The show and the jam gave me the time to think of what I need to do in order to get into the professional level. This was a whole another experience added to what I loved doing.

It was a big event over 200 kids from different high schools came and was featured on The Press Enterprise News for Inland Southern California.

Quiet on the Set!

Event on multimedia careers aims to get high school students thinking visually as they make video

11:11 PM PST on Friday, December 5, 2008

With three other students on the set under bright studio lights, it was time to film an intro, and for student camera operators to get their practice, too.

This segment of “Investigation: Animation” will not make it to the airwaves of cable station KZSW in Temecula because the high school students on Friday were just getting a taste of what Mt. San Jacinto College students are learning in video production, 3-D animation and other multimedia programs offered at the Menifee Valley campus.

<img src="http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/8459/video06ripc400ff6.jpg" alt="Ethan Sisson, left, 19, of Menifee, films Kurt Roeper, right, 16, of Canyon Lake, during a green screen presentation.
Mt. San Jacinto College’s Festival of Animation and Video Entertainment’s fall jamboree all day Friday gave students and teachers an opportunity to learn more about video and animation through lectures, demonstrations and some hands-on experience, such as the film.

The college is in the second year of a two-year, $250,000 state grant intended to strengthen career and technical education and create a pipeline between high school and the college.

Some high schools already work with the college to create accredited multimedia courses that will earn students college credit if they transfer to the community college.

Rancho Vista High School in Temecula, San Jacinto High School and Murrieta Valley High School are among those with accredited classes. Other schools, including West Valley High in Hemet, are working on it, according to Don Smith, college instructor and multimedia chairman.

Students will have a chance to enter videos and 3-D animation projects in a competition at the college this spring.

<img src="http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/1756/video06ripa400bp0.jpg" alt=" Rodrigo Peña / The Press-Enterprise Mark Gines, 29, left, of Menifee, shows Stephanie Spencer, 16, of Murrieta, how to work the video camera while Shane Moore looks on.
West Valley students will be entering a video documentary showing how their school’s “High School Musical” spring production is put together.

“They are giving us ideas what we need to do with our film” to win, said Jonathan Frisby 17, a West Valley senior. He said he’ll be behind the cameras with classmates Shane Archer, 18, and Justin Dunn, 16.

Frisby wants to be an electrical engineer but plans to enhance his video skills with Mt. San Jacinto classes. Dunn will enlist in the Army after graduation but already has his eye on opportunities to do documentary and training videos in the military.

“Today is about giving you the seed. … We’re giving you a taste of what is out there,” Smith told students during a 3-D animation presentation. The award-winning 3-D expert started in 1980, and his credits include 1983’s “The Last Starfighter,” one of the early films to use 3-D.

He and other presenters emphasized how multimedia skills may be the ticket to jobs or, combined with other skills, will give them an advantage in the job market.

<img src="http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/8245/video06ripb400gn0.jpg" alt="Nathan Budzinski, right, 18, from Menifee, and Aunjuli Meggs, 17, of Lake Elsinore, listen how to make a light saber glow using a video software program.
Traffic accident reconstruction, crime-solving tools like on the TV show “CSI,” and even simulations done for prospective corporate investors all use multimedia skills, Smith said.

West Valley instructors Stacey Bailey and Rod Martel brought 20 students to the festival. The video their students will shoot in spring also will be sent to Disney, which solicits student work, Bailey said.

The event also awakened an interest for junior Bree Smith, 16, an artist who frequently doodles.

At the event, she discovered storyboarding, where artists render concept drawings. She wants to learn more about adding colors to her sketches in Photoshop and then animating them, she said.

Adam De Jauregui, 17, a Rancho Vista senior, said he wants to get into the video game industry and create characters. He participated in a summer multimedia program through the college and in spring will take more classes at Temecula Valley High.

The visit was a boon for students.

They “need to see themselves on a college campus. They need to see this and it’s not ‘alien’ and that people here care,” said Patty Doody, a Rancho Vista instructor who brought 37 students to campus.

Mt. San Jacinto’s Smith, who returned to the classroom at least seven times to learn more, emphasized that especially in fields where technology changes at light speed, lifelong learning is the standard.

MSJC program Films new TV show

Students and instructors from Mt. San Jacinto College will load up high-tech video equipment and head out to some of the Inland area’s most interesting attractions this summer to film a new TV show called “Investigation: Animation.”

The new show is part of MSJC’s Festival of Animation and Video Entertainment program, better known as FAVE. It will feature locations like the Orange Empire Trolley Museum in Perris, Diamond Valley Lake and the Western Center Museum, both in Hemet, and the Perris Sky Diving Center, said Don Smith, instructor and department chair of multimedia at Mt. San Jacinto College.

FAVE’s “Investigation: Animation” will air on the Temecula-based cable station KZSW-TV starting in the fall.

By filming the show, MSJC students will get hands-on experience in animation principles. Folks at home will get an interesting and informative show that will tell them about some of the destinations and attractions in the Inland area, Smith said.

“The show is loaded with animation effects that will appeal to a wide audience and attract high school students wanting to get into the program after high school,” Smith said.

MSJC began the FAVE program in 2007 after the college received a two-year, $250,000 state grant designed to improve vocational opportunities for high school students. The program links public high schools with the community college and local industries. Participating high schools or districts include San Jacinto Unified School District, Temescal Canyon High School, Riverside ROP, Temecula Valley High School, West Valley High School in Hemet, Beaumont High School and Rancho Vista High School. Industry partners include KZSW-TV, RKR Media, Altek Media, the City of Temecula and the Western Center for Archaeology and Paleontology.

“Investigation: Animation” will also become a tool for learning in participating high school animation classes to help students understand topics they are working on, Smith said.

FAVE targets two growing industry areas: animation and video. The show provides on-the-job experience for advanced animation, video and production students at the college.

Smith, who serves as the show’s host, graduated from the California Institute of the Arts. He helped create dozens of commercials for clients like TRW, Rockwell and Mercedes-Benz. He also worked on a Mick Jagger video and feature films like “The Last Starfighter” and “Labyrinth.”

HEMET – Some new graduates of Mt. San Jacinto College describe overcoming obstacles, including doubt and insecurity about whether they were college material, and for others, earning the degree was a matter of persistence and carving out time to take each class.

Amid what Dennis Anderson, the college’s interim vice president for instructional services, called some “amazing stories,” the Class of 2008 reached their community college goals Friday.

A record 1,046 students received associate degrees or certificates, up from 852 students in 2007. College officials estimated about one-third of them participated in the ceremonies under balmy skies at the Ramona Bowl Amphitheatre in Hemet.

Diane Boss, 62, started her college education in 1970 and over the years took classes to enhance her job skills for different careers.

She received an associate’s degree in business administration but figured she had taken enough units at Mt. San Jacinto and UCR that “I could have had my bachelor’s if I focused on just doing one thing,” she said by phone earlier this week.

“I never really had the opportunity to just go to school. I always worked full time,” said Boss, an administrative associate for the college’s fundraising foundation. She took career-oriented classes, and as her career changed so did her classes. She earned a public relations certificate at UCR and a fundraising certificate at Mt. San Jacinto.

The country-western dancer and kayaker, who lives in the country south of Hemet, will take a break next semester before setting more college goals, she said.

Among those who did not participate in the cap and gown ceremonies was Anthony Carbajal 20, who chose to work his pizza restaurant job to earn money for expenses to transfer to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He plans to major in business with a minor in communications. He earned a management certificate at Mt. San Jacinto.

“I’m trying to save up money. I’m trying to pick up shifts,” he said by phone earlier in the week.

Carbajal echoed remarks made by graduation speaker Julian Alcazar, thanking their mothers for support and describing learning obstacles. Alcazar took advantage of math tutors, and Carbajal got help in math and English at the college’s Learning Resource Center.

Carbajal credits counselors, faculty and tutors with influencing his college success. “I’ve just grown so much at Mt. San Jacinto. Leaving high school, I just wasn’t ready for college,” said the Murrieta High School graduate. “I worked my way up, and they helped me achieve confidence.”

California Secretary of Education David Long in his commencement address talked about the importance of setting priorities in 840 months, the average person’s lifespan. Long is a former superintendent and county schools chief in Riverside County.

In an emotional moment during the ceremonies, the college awarded an associate’s degree in computer information systems posthumously to Timothy Waters, 51, of Hemet, who battled a brain tumor and died within a day of completing his last college assignment March 13. His only son, Brad Waters, accepted the degree on his behalf.

Saturday was an eventful day filled with animation and “whats behind the scenes kind of thing day”. The FAVE Jamboree was a workshop for all but entirely I wish there was more people. A bunch of kids in general as well as people or students missed an opportunity to learn and to absorb the teachers who came to the workshop.

It was a very long day for others who has been there since the early morning till later on in the evening. The food was great, really great in my books. This probably was my first time ever in volunteering to be at an event; talking to some guest that arrived they were thrilled and excited.

During the workshop I chatted up with this one kid who was snacking on a brownie; overwhelmed and pumped with energy about what was going on; besides that he was paranoid that his friend was going to leave him. The thing that was interesting is that he was excited; excited to be there and to form himself to be a sponge to take up all things that was going on in the workshops.

I wish I could of gone to all the workshops that was going on. It was helpful to what I heard from other people and to a couple workshops that I attended was pretty cool “hands on tutorial”. I am hoping I can participate next year again.

Example of the stuff that was going on there:
